Woman - Lok Sabha Speaker

It is like honouring a woman ,and who better than Ms. Sonia Gandhi could be, to implement the same ,initiated a move to install a woman Lok Sabha Speaker for the 15th Lok Sabha. Among the many names floating, the name of Water Resources Minister in the new Government, Meira Kumar ,hardly two three days after being sworn in, was picked by the Congress High Command for the position of Lok Sabha Speaker though officially not yet confirmed.
Mrs Sonia Gandhi Congress President and also Head of the Congress Core Committee, met at the Prime Minister's residence last evening, the initial favourite V Kishore Chandra Deo lost out to two women in the final round, the other being Girija Vyas.
Mr V Kishore Deo who had earned a reputation for his diligence as the Chairman of the Privileges Committee and won the Lok Sabha seat from Araku in Andhra Pradesh was also in the running initially, however things are now settling around two women Ms. Girja Vyas and Ms. Miera Kumar .Party leaders felt that by naming a woman if elected, she will be the first woman in the Chair of the House and a woman Dalit for the post, they would send a powerful political message. The Congress has eight Dalits from within its ranks, in the new ministry, five in the Cabinet, and three as Ministers of State, including one with independent charge.
The Union Cabinet on Saturday met for the first time and is understood to have discussed and approved the President's address to the joint sitting of Parliament on June 4.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh chaired the meeting which was also attended by Ministers of State with Independent charge.
